Two Hospitals Team Up to Improve a Flu Vaccine
In an unprecedented example of cooperation between hospitals in different parts of the nation, The St. Mary’s Hospital in Beverly Hills, CA, and Downtown Public Hospital in Chicago, IL, conducted a joint study designed to test a new improved flu vaccine. This winter, a group of 20 randomly selected patients in St. Mary’s hospital were given the new vaccine. The results were then compared to a group of 20 randomly selected patients in Downtown Public Hospital, who were given a standard flu vaccine. The study was very successful, as the patients that were given the old vaccine were three times as likely to get ill with flu than the patients who received the new vaccine.
2008, U. of M. (Jaeggi at al.)
Experimenters selected a sample of 400 U. of M. students.
The students were invited to the lab, where they were randomly divided into two groups: the treatment group and the control group.
All subjects were then given an IQ test, and their scores were recorded.
The students in the control group were then sent home and told to come back in 4 weeks for re-testing.
Meanwhile, the students in the treatment group came regularly to the lab, where they engaged in online working memory training games. The researchers recorded their progress, and noted the improvement of their performance on the games.
After 4 weeks all the students came back to the lab and were given a similar IQ test to the one they took at the beginning.
